“Do we show up in ChatGPT?” is a question I now hear in almost every first call. No official tool answers it, but you can measure it with a method. This is how I do it.
1. Choose the right questions
Don’t just ask “what do you know about my brand?”. Customers don’t search like that. List 10 to 20 questions a customer would ask before they know you:
- “What’s the best invoicing software for a small business?”
- “Which SEO consultants do you recommend for SaaS companies?”
- “Where can I buy an electric bike in Dublin?”
- “What are the alternatives to [competitor]?”
Include broad sector questions, location questions and comparison questions.
2. Test in several tools
Ask the same questions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI Mode. Use a private window or an account without history, because answers change with previous conversations.
3. Log the results
In a simple spreadsheet, record for each question and tool:
- Whether your brand appears.
- Its position, if there’s a list.
- Which competitors appear.
- Which sources are cited (sites, directories, articles).
- Whether anything about your brand is wrong.
Answers vary from day to day, so a single test means little. What matters is repeating it every month and watching the trend.
4. Check visits in Google Analytics
In Google Analytics 4, under Acquisition › Traffic acquisition, filter the source by chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it shows, which makes it easier to spot.
On most sites these visits are still few. Compare their conversion rate with organic traffic: it’s usually higher, because people arrive with a recommendation.
5. What about Search Console?
Search Console includes clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Performance report, but mixed with regular search. There’s no AI-only filter yet.
What to do with the data
The cited sources are the most useful part. If Perplexity keeps citing the same directory or comparison article, that’s where your brand needs to be. I explain the rest of the work in what is GEO.

FAQ
Are there tools that do this automatically?
Yes, several SEO platforms now have AI monitoring modules. They help with many questions, but it’s worth starting by hand to understand what to measure.
How often should I test?
Once a month is enough. Answers change a lot from day to day; the trend is what matters.
What if AI says something wrong about my company?
Look at the sources it cites and fix the information at the source: your site, your Google Business Profile and the directories you appear in.
